Church's thrift store marks first year in business

People who discover Trinity United Methodist Church's thrift store are surprised by the selection and prices.

Still the store, which opened July 18, 2009, remains relatively unknown, even to those who pride themselves on their knowledge of local rummaging hot spots.

"I am actually a thrift-shop junky," said Catonsville resident Nancy Smith, who visited the store at Westchester and Rockwell avenues in Catonsville for the first time July 10.

After spending hours at the store, Smith's shopping basket was overflowing with a pile of clothes.

"I'm just amazed at how much was here," Smith said.

"Their prices are astounding," she said.

Items that would cost $5 at Goodwill or Salvation Army stores are only $2 at the church thrift store, she said.

On July 10, for example, the store had, among other things, a large George Foreman grill, plenty of dishes and silverware, books, CDs, movies on VHS, clocks, mirrors, paintings, dolls, board games, and just about anything a family that's starting over would need.

Though the store, which is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., sometimes has only one customer at a time, the church's pastor, Janet Becker, is pleased with business.

"I think it's been a success," Becker said.

"Most of the funds are funneled into the church's mission programs," the Catonsville resident said.

"At least $200 we used to provide meals to the homeless shelter" on the grounds of Spring Grove Hospital Center.

The store has also provided a chance for the church, which has just over 100 members, to do more permanent good.

"As we were getting into it, we realized we had a lot of opportunities to really help out the community," Becker said.

"For example, lots of sports equipment came in at one point," she said.

It was enough equipment for the church to donate to a Christian community center in west Baltimore, instead of selling a baseball bat here and a pair of cleats there.

Another opportunity arose when Baltimore County's Department of Social Services, with which the church maintains contact, connected the church with a family that was moving from a homeless shelter to a house.

"It was an empty home so they needed stuff," Becker said.

Because the church has so much in its thrift store, they were able to donate much of what the family would need.

Donations to the shop come from both church members and members of the community, Becker said.

Now and then, when someone dies, the family of the deceased will drop off a load of goods.

"Sometimes, they drop off some stuff and look around, and go out with a bag," Becker said.

Donations to the thrift store have been so great that the church added a monthly outdoor flea market to help move goods out the door.

"We did a few flea markets before the thrift shop, (but) a couple months ago, some people in the congregation were moving, so we had a lot of stuff," Becker said.

Items that don't fit in the shop are kept in a portable storage unit outside. When the church hosts a flea market, the stored items are put on display.

Even with some items in storage, the thrift store is well-stocked.

The room Smith rummaged through was packed with clothing and accessories, including dozens of pairs of shoes and a few men's dress shirts still folded up in their original plastic.

The 64-year-old appreciated the store's appearance as well as selection.

"I'm very neat," she said. "I respect stores like this."

Leaving the shelves and clothing racks as tidy as she'd found them, Smith had plenty to dig through, such as silk scarves, bed sheets, linens, throw pillows, racks of clothing and even draperies.

The adjoining hallway was lined on both sides with bookshelves of cookbooks, almanacs, books on art and wildlife, paperback novels and works by William Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe, Plutarch and Ralph Waldo Emerson, among others.

It varies based on the type of place you work (bar, club) the type of customers the place has, the area, the price of the drinks, the amount you all pull. I know of places where the bartenders are lucky to get the legal amount per hour pay (less than 3 bucks and never get tips) and places you can get 500 bucks an hour in tips alone. It's very varied.
As far as finding a bartending job here, most places hire someone who works in the place as a lower job like host, sever and someone trains them. Other places will hire someone off the street even without knowledge. If you need more info contact me.

Go get a book called " what to expect when you are expecting". It's the pregnancy bible and will help with all these questions. Your question as well as many others that you would not expect is in there. It's excellent in describing all of these little things that worry moms and help distinguish when something is "normal" or not.
    Good Luck!

  13. With my first, my son was born 3 weeks early. With my second, I went 2 days over my due date and then begged for an induction.
Every pregnancy is different, unless there is a problem with you physically that caused your first to be born early, for example if you have an incompetent cervix.
There is always a chance for miscarriage, but again, unless you have some physical problem that makes you prone to miscarriage, the chance for miscarrying isn't any greater this time than any other time.
It's normal to freak out and stress! Just remember every pregnancy is different, and take good care of yourself. That's all you can do.

maybe u can make the cake into a square/rectangle, and then get a large "1 size" tracer, and put it through the cake.
That way you can have the figure of 1, and leave the extras out.

    Hope this helps.
