Despite city orders to abide Costa Mesa’s ban on medical marijuana, at least one pot dispensary told to close remained open for business Friday.
City code enforcement officers escorted by police served three dispensaries with cease-and-desist orders Thursday, instructing them to close immediately for operating outside the boundaries of their business licenses.
At least one of the clinics — MedMar Patient Care Collective, 440 Fair Drive, Suite V — ignored the order.
Another dispensary, Nutritional Concepts Pain Releaf Center, 2787 Bristol St., was closed Friday. A note on the dispensary’s website said the business was closed temporarily.
Many of the medical marijuana dispensaries in the city have business licenses to operate as alternative health or vitamin shops, said Costa Mesa Police Capt. Les Gogerty, adding that if the businesses continue to dole out medical marijuana, they will be subject to fines and legal action.
“They say they’re going to be an alternative medical center, or therapeutic massage or medicinal herbs and so forth,” Gogerty said. “They have bottles of legal herbal vitamins and massagers, but you also have marijuana.”
Police have recently noted more motorists being arrested for driving under the influence of marijuana, and businesses next to pot dispensaries have complained to the city about increased foot traffic and the smell of pot, Police Chief Chris Shawkey said.
The city will continue to shut down a growing number of pot dispensaries that have sprouted up in Costa Mesa over the past several months, he said.
“They are in violation of a city ordinance, and we intend to continue to investigate and inspect them,” Shawkey said. “If we find they are in violation of a city ordinance, we will take whatever action is appropriate.”
One of the dispensaries, MedMar, plans to rally supporters for an 11 a.m. protest today at Costa Mesa City Hall.
MedMar staff declined to answer questions Friday, but a message on the dispensary’s website urged supporters to attend the rally, adding, “Costa Mesa does not want to allow safe access to your medication.”
Costa Mesa resident Sheryll Alexander, a MedMar client, said in an e-mail that she was disappointed that city officials were trying to shut down the dispensary.
Alexander said she uses medical marijuana to help cope with a painful skin condition.
“I like MedMar because this collective complies with all state regulations, and the people are very compassionate and caring,” Alexander wrote. “Truly, MedMar is about the medical marijuana patient who truly needs pain medication and not about selling pot to delinquents.”

God why do they hire for an uncomfortable thing like this a REALLY UNCOMFORTABLE “model”??? As if the neti pot isn’t bad enough! (although it works great)
Well I personally went to two before ending up at the vet I am at now.
You should always care about service. It doesn't make just your own experience better but your pet's too. One place I went to dropped my dog off a metal table, my dog limped for the rest of the day, and the vet had the nerve to blame me for it.
Then should come money. As much as you love your pet if you spend too much then you won't be able to afford your pet. If it is too much try to find another place that is close and you like, If it is a little further that is okay.
Just make sure that your pet is taken care of. Afterall they are your friend/family
very dope Danny, THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME PLAY A PART!
Cops who actually care about helping people probably feel bad about destroying people’s lives for no reason.
Internet giant joined by Nokia, General Electric and Intel in calling on US goverment to upgrade electricity grid using IT American presidents used to promise a chicken in every pot. If it were up to Google it would be a smart meter in every home. In an initiative with the Climate Group, the company this week wrote a letter and hosted a summit at its Washington DC offices to urge Barack Obama to adopt a goal of providing every household with real time information about their electricity use. “By giving people the ability to monitor and manage their energy consumption, for instance, via their computers, phones or other devices, we can unleash the forces of innovation in homes and businesses,” says the letter, signed by more than 40 leading businesses and environmental groups. As the roster of signatures – which includes Nokia, General Electric, AT&T, Intel and Hewlett Packard – suggests Google is not the only company to see huge potential in upgrading America’s antiquated grid with…
